Featured Maven :: Naturally Nappy Maven

Today, I present to you Brittany Walls, who affectionately titled herself as a “Naturally Nappy Maven.”  Learn more about her and be sure to stop by her site to say “hi.”

Name: Brittany Walls
Location: Milford, Connecticut
Occupation: Student

How long have you been natural?
I have been natural for 1 month as of  July 7, 2013.  My last relaxer was in December of 2012.

Did you big chop or transition and how did you make that decision?
I did transition for 6 long months and couldn’t take it anymore!  I knew that I didn’t want to just shave my head bald.  I was too attached to my shoulder length hair.

What made you decide to go natural?
I wanted to do a lot of styles that relaxed hair couldn’t produce.  Then, I noticed my hair was thinning out and it wasn’t as thick as it used to be.  Around the time I decided to go natural, I read books about black hair history and how slaves had to cut their hair off and change their names.

How did your family and friends react to your decision to go natural?
Well, my father and siblings were all for me going natural.  They said, “No more Lyes for you!” on the other hand, my mom didn’t really support the idea even though, she was natural until she was 20.  She said, “I worked so hard to get your hair like that.”  But, I knew that this was my decision and I couldn’t let anything stop me.

How has going natural affected your life, way of thinking, etc if at all?
Being natural has made me more confident and FREE! I  get more compliments on my hair than I ever did before.

What is the best/worst compliment you have received since going natural?
The best compliment I’ve gotten was when I was in Whole Foods and a lady asked me how I got my hair like this. I haven’t received a bad compliment, but I’m sure I will!

What is the best and worst thing you have done since going natural?
The best thing I’ve done since going natural was investing my time and money into finding my own style.  The worst thing is that being natural really turns you into a product junkie if a product doesn’t work!
