The Hair:

How long have you been natural?

I have been natural for over 15 years.

Did you big chop or transition and how did you make that decision?

I did the big chop and I just made the decision based on a course that I took in college.

What made you decide to go natural?

I took a course in Africana Studies in Undergrad and it changed my perception of the world around me and helped me to challenge societies definition of beauty.

How did your family and friends react to your decision to go natural?

My friends were and continue to be supportive of my decision. However, I have family members that it bothers tremendously.

How has going natural affected your life, way of thinking, etc if at all?

Being natural has helped me with my confidence and self esteem in many ways. It helped me to realize that I can define my own standard of how I wear my hair.

From a professional standpoint, have you ever had any problems in your career or workplace because of your natural hair?

I haven’t had any problems in my career in regards to my hair. Further, I am always questioned when I change it from a wet look to a dry look and asked if I cut my hair and if they can touch it.

What is the best/worst compliment you have received since going natural?

The worst compliment that I received was someone telling me that my hair looks like I just got off of the slave ship.

What is the best and worst thing you have done since going natural?

The best things that I have done since going natural is to share my experience with others going through the process. I have also begun to blog, create youtube videos and design apparel for natural women.

The Person:

Do you have any hobbies or passions that you would like to share with us?

I am an avid writer and have been featured on various blogs. I also write poetry and play acoustic guitar. I also have a youtube channel; I am the CEO/Founder of Twisted Curly LLC, which is a apparel line for women with natural hair. Lastly, I sit on various boards supporting such causes as adoption and autism.

How did you get interested in these activities?

I have been a writer since I was a little girl and my love for music and poetry lends it’s self to that time period also. I decided to start my youtube channel and my apparel line to network with other woman with natural hair.

From a career standpoint, what are your interests and are you currently pursuing them?

I am currently pursing my apparel line and would like to expand it to other items. My first 2 items are available now on my website.
