How long have you been natural?
Feb 5th, 2011 (almost 7months!)
Did you big chop or transition and how did you make that decision?
I did THE BIG CHOP…It was not my intention though…lol I have had many styles and I came to the conclusion that I have done them ALL and I want a change, so once I got to the salon the stylist basically said “Girl, we cutting off.” The End…lol
What made you decide to go natural?
The negative effects of chemicals and The movie Good Hair…;)
How did your family and friends react to your decision to go natural?
My friends loved it…after they saw it, but were nervous for me prior to doing it. Now I get a lot of “you have a nice face”. My mom was like eh, so you gonna get dreads now (in her best Jamaican accent…) my dad’s response “you look like a sista now!” (also in his best Jamaican accent…) and my brother…mute. …but that’s because he doesn’t think much.
How has going natural affected your life, way of thinking, etc if at all?
One thing I did not expect is this new response I get from other natural women, my contact list has filled up with women who share tips and tricks with me. Most of them I met in an elevator or waiting in line somewhere. It’s so fun to me that being natural adds such diversity into my life. Also I absolutely LOVE how much easier it is to live life without “creamy crack”…sober for 7months BABY!
From a professional standpoint, have you ever had any problems in your career or workplace because of your natural hair?
This is a good one, believe it or not, I have rocked mo-hawks, blonde hair, and shaved sides at my job and they just associate it with my personality I am an artist and it’s my body and my canvas. However I have a job like no other 9 to 5. We are very liberal here and wear jeans Monday-Friday!
What is the best/worst compliment you have received since going natural?
Best-“Robin you have a cute face!”-Shawn
Worst-“ ZERO” no, not being cocky…
What is the best and worst thing you have done since going natural?
Best- Spend wayyyy less time getting ready!
Worst- Not conditioning as much as I should…
Do you have any hobbies or passions that you would like to share with us?
Photography and Music, I dream of one day bonding these two key components of my DNA into a career.
How did you get interested in these activities?
Passion is not selective it’s hereditary for me. I always knew what I loved and that I could make it last forever. Music was something my dad is responsible for 100%, my parents are Jamaican and have an overwhelming respect for ALL genres of music. I was getting down to Phil Collins when I was 6yrs old. Tina Turner is my mom’s BFF (not really…only in her mind), and my dad has Elton John in his contact list(no you cannot have it, nor can I). Music is my life!
From a career standpoint, what are your interests and are you currently pursuing them?
I am working on numerous projects with numerous soul mates. One in particular is a Non-profit called We Care Academy. I started this adventure over year ago with my best friend Earl Adams. We Care Academy For Youth Development is a nonprofit organization that focuses on youth development, education, literacy, arts, community, and childcare. I got involved with this organization primarily due to budget cuts in the Arts. I am a photo major and it is important to me that other kids get the chance to decide what they want to be in life. With The Arts being taken away, creativity is essentially dying. The world NEEDS creative people. I want to give the world that. Check us out!
